Patterns / Poomse
Patterns, or Poomses in the Korean language, are a series of defending and attacking movements performed against imaginary opponents in a set pattern. Through the practice of forms, students come to learn the applications of various techniques of Taekwondo. Forms serve a multi-dimensional role, aiding in development and refinement of coordination, balance, timing, breath control and rhythm, all of which are essential skills to the Taekwondo student.

Pattern 5

1. turn 90° left, moving the left foot into a forward stance left arm low block
2. slide the left foot back into a standing position left arm hammer-fist strike
3. turn 180° right, moving the right foot into a forward stance right arm low block
4. slide the right foot back into a standing position right arm hammer-fist strike
5. turn 90° left, moving the left foot into a forward stance left arm middle block right arm inner block
6. right leg front kick step down with the right foot into forward stance right hand middle block left arm inner block
7. left leg front kick step down with the left foot into forward stance left hand middle right arm inner block
8. move the right foot into a forward stance right hand back-fist strike
9. turn 270° left, moving the left foot into a back stance left arm knife-hand block
10. move the right foot forward into a forward stance right arm reinforced elbow strike to midsection
11. turn 180° right, moving the right foot into a back stance right arm knife-hand block
12. move the left foot forward into a forward stance left arm reinforced elbow strike to midsection
13. turn 90° left, moving the left foot into a forward stance left arm low block right arm inner block
14. right leg front kick step down with the right foot into a forward stance right arm low block left arm inner block
15. turn 90° left, moving the left foot into a forward stance left arm high block
16. right leg side kick step down with the right foot into a forward stance left arm elbow strike to palm of right hand
17. turn 180° right, moving the right foot into a forward stance right arm high block
18. left leg side kick step down with the left foot into a forward stance right arm elbow strike to palm of left hand
19. turn 90° left, moving the left foot into a forward stance left arm low block right arm inner middle block
20. right leg front kick, jump into a cross stance right hand back-fist strike, kiyap!
